Learn to fight and die properly (on stage)

Learn the fighting system of the Berliner Rittergilde: Code de l’Étoile.
This 2-hour workshop introduces our combat system, which focuses on safety, theatrical quality, and play rather than competition.

You will learn the basic strikes and parries of sword-and-shield fighting, as well as the principles of good stage combat and historical portrayal. The course also covers realistic hit reactions, how to take a convincing and dramatic “beautiful death,” and basic fall training. In addition, we will explore the mindset needed to create an exciting and believable fight performance for both fighters and audience.

Training swords and shields* are provided.

*Shields for left-handed participants are available only in limited numbers.

Participation and safety requirements: This is a physical stage-combat workshop using plastic training swords and wooden shields. It involves movement, controlled contact, basic falls and close cooperation with other participants.

Participants must be at least 16 years old and at least 150 cm tall to attend. Participants under 18 years must have a parent or legal guardian present throughout the workshop.

Exceptions to the age or height requirement may only be made by the instructor for safety reasons. If you want to request an exception, please speak to the instructor in Berliner Rittergilde’s medieval camp before buying a ticket. Buying a ticket does not guarantee participation if the safety requirements are not met.

All participants must follow the instructor’s safety instructions immediately, including stop commands. The instructor may refuse or stop participation if a participant does not have sufficient maturity, coordination, control, or willingness to follow instructions. Unsafe behaviour, excessive force, uncontrolled striking, targeting prohibited areas, failure to follow instructions, or misuse of equipment may result in immediate removal from the workshop.

Training swords and shields may only be used under instructor supervision and only in the designated training area. They may not be used elsewhere at the festival.
