Den vackra staden Norwich är hem för en av Europas mest fulländade romanska katedraler, med Englands näst högsta kyrkspira och landets största klostergångar. Norwich Cathedral Choir räknas som en av Storbritanniens främsta katedralkörer, och i denna konsert bjuder körens seniora flickkorister, lay clerks och choral scholars på en rik palett av engelsk körmusik – från 1500-talet fram till vår egen tid.
Konsertens första del tar sin utgångspunkt i completoriet, dagens sista tidegärd, och kretsar kring temat ljus. John Rutters Hymn to the Creator of Light följs av två kontrasterande tonsättningar av completoriehymnen O nata lux – först av den samtida tonsättaren Lucy Walker, därefter i Thomas Tallis klassiska version från 1500-talet. Completoriets lovsång Nunc dimittis framförs i Gustav Holsts strålande åttastämmiga tonsättning. Robert Parsons innerliga Ave Maria ramas in av motetter av Stanford och Harris, två centralgestalter inom 1800-talets engelska körtradition. Konserten avslutas med fem spirituals ur Tippetts mäktiga oratorium A Child of our Time, följt av en ljusare avslutning i John Rutters charmfulla arrangemang av fem traditionella engelska folkvisor.
The beautiful city of Norwich is home to one of Europe's most accomplished Romanesque cathedrals, with England's second-tallest church spire and the country's largest cloisters. Norwich Cathedral Choir ranks among Britain's finest cathedral choirs, and in this concert the choir's senior girl choristers, lay clerks and choral scholars offer a rich palette of English choral music – from the sixteenth century to our own day.
The first half of the concert takes its point of departure from Compline, the last of the daily offices, and revolves around the theme of light. John Rutter's Hymn to the Creator of Light is followed by two contrasting settings of the Compline hymn O nata lux – first by contemporary composer Lucy Walker, then in Thomas Tallis's classic sixteenth-century version. The Compline canticle Nunc dimittis is performed in Gustav Holst's radiant eight-part setting. Robert Parsons's tender Ave Maria is framed by motets by Stanford and Harris, two central figures in the nineteenth-century English choral tradition. The concert concludes with five spirituals from Tippett's great oratorio A Child of our Time, followed by a lighter close in John Rutter's charming arrangements of five traditional English folksongs.
