Sydafrikas rikedom har skapats under de senaste 120 åren av över fem miljoner svarta män som rekryterades från hela södra Afrika för att gräva efter guld. Dying for Gold berättar hur guldbrytning har gått hand i hand med sjukdom och död sedan upptäckten av guld 1886. Idag står guldgruvesamhällen i Sydafrika, Moçambique, Swaziland, Lesotho och Botswana inför världens största epidemi av silikos och tuberkulos till följd av exponering för damm i guldgruvor.
Filmen berättar bakgrundshistorien till Sydafrikas största grupptalan där guldgruvearbetare anklagade sina tidigare arbetsgivare för systematisk försummelse och för att ha orsakat sjukdom och död i jakten på vinst. En förlikning nåddes 2019, men gruvarbetarnas och deras familjers kamp för rättvis ersättning fortsätter än idag.
Visningen följs av ett samtal med filmens medregissör och medproducent, Catherine Meyburgh. Vi kommer att få höra mer om filmen och det nuvarande arbetet inom kampanjen Justice for Miners.

South Africa’s wealth was produced during the last 120 years by over five Million black men who were recruited from across Southern Africa to dig for gold. Dying for Gold tells how gold mining has gone hand in hand with illness and death since the discovery of gold in 1886. Today gold miner communities in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho and Botswana face the world’s greatest epidemic of silicosis and tuberculosis as a result of exposure to dust in gold mines.
The film tells the backstory of South Africa’s biggest class action court case in which gold miners charged their former employers with systemic neglect and causing illness and death in the pursuit of profits. A settlement agreement was achieved in 2019, yet the miners’ and their families struggle for just compensation continues to this day.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with the co-director and co-producer of the film, Catherine Meyburgh. We will hear more about the film and the current work of Justice for Miners campaign.
